I also started to buy the snacks. I was impressed that the sweet potato snacks was such a big bag.
I did order the first order on Amazon but the last order I ordered straight from their website.
The Good:
After a month, my dog’s skin/hair problems, digestive issues, and gas were all resolved.
We previously fed her 2 cups of IAMS dry dog food per meal (2x per day). Now she only eats 1 to 1.25 cups of Nature’s Diet meal.
Dog drinks less than half of the water she used to.
The Bad:
You have to mix this food with water, in a 1:1 ratio, and then let it sit for 15mins to 1hour.
Once the food is mixed with water we normally let it sit for 15 mins and it quickly congeals into a thick moist paste with hydrated chucks of meat and vegetables. This is what I consider to be the normal or “good” consistency.
Some bags however don’t congeal at all no matter how long you let it sit. This means you feed your dog something like a brown soup with hard chunks of meat and vegetables in it. Not good. I’m guessing these bags lack whatever binding agent they use. After having this problem twice, I decided to open another bag of Nature’s Diet and see if it had the same “brown soup” consistency but it did not. The bag appeared to congeal or thicken as expected. Based on that, I mixed the good bag and the bad bag together and had a dog food that was somewhere between good and bad consistency.
Then it happened again. One good bag, one bad bag. I mixed the two and worked with what we had.
Then I had six “bad” bags of Nature’s Diet. Every bag, whether of good or bad quality, had the same label which indicated “1722292 Best Buy 10/2024.”
Different Purchasing Options:
Originally I purchased this product from Amazon and then learned I could get it a few dollars cheaper directly from the Nature’s Diet website. Because of the issues identified here, I’ve switched back and forth between Amazon and direct from Nature’s Diet and the lack of consistency exits no matter where you purchase it from.
Lack of Customer Service:
At this price point, I was done conducting my own dog food science experiments. I sent the company and email describing these issues and asked for a resolution. After more than two weeks, I never received a response.
I reviewed Nature’s Diet return/refund policy and it stated you can only return unopened food. That’s problematic for customers when you don’t know what you’re going to get before you open the bag.
With their lack of response to my email, I contacted them using their “Contact Us” feature on their website. After more than two weeks using “Contact Us”, I never received a response.
In summary, this is not what I consider quality dog food. Based on my experience, there appears to be no consistency from one bag to the next. It appears Nature’s Diet has no quality control. It also appears they have no customer service.
Based on these experiences, I plan to transition to a competitors product.
I tend to add more water then recommended and wait 5-10 minutes longer. I put toppers on it perhaps half the time. The dog loves it just as always.
Word of caution though. Some people complain about their dog vomiting. It is almost certainly because 1)This food is RICH. 2)You need to transition your dog or use this as a "in between meal" as I do. 3)Give them less than you think but more often. To date this has never made my dog vomit but I experienced that with a family member I recommended it to. Trust me, its good food and that is not why your dog vomited.
As a side note everyone, including my vet, comments on how white my dogs teeth still are with almost no plaque etc. I am sure much of it are her genes but a lot comes from hygiene which includes this food. I don't feed my dog anything but this, Purina Pro-Plan, a LOT of various "dead animal parts" (dried fish, cow hooves, chicken feet, etc) and then toppers like Natures Diet Kelp and Bone Broth.
I can't recommend this food more and considering the price and the source of the food its just crazy.
Old review from 2021:
Attached are different stages of the rehydration over about 15 minutes. My companion LOVES this food to the extent she knows when I am making it and will knock the bowl around for several minutes after its all gone hoping to extract more. The dried product has a bland smell but once hydrated even for a human it has a very pleasant aroma and the look borders on what I'd see for some prepared stew meals for people. Nuts? I have actually tried some of the dried bits and rehydrated myself. It actually was quite mild in taste. Like a stew with no spices though a bit dry (expected, let it rehydrate longer). In any case, my dog nuts for this to the point of lunacy and I ended up ordering a 3 pack off their site as well as a mixed pack of their treats which she goes insane over too. They even sent a gift salmon dried treat pack with the beef and chicken meals. I hope they continue as a company and recipes as I have no intention of looking back on this decision and will continue to order from them. Amazing product.
